The questionnaire is provided in the framework of the project:

“ECVET-compliant training to implement ecologically viable AGRiculture On INdustrial Surfaces of URban Environments – AGRO-INSURE – 2023-1-DE02-KA220-VET-000158035”

This questionnaire aims to collect your feedback as urban and peri-urban agriculture stakeholders, to facilitate the domain analysis and consolidation, as well as to verify and refine the training needs and preferable training modes. The objective is to identify VET training gaps as perceived by industrial surface owners and propose a curriculum and policies to cover these gaps. The questionnaire also aims to collect your thoughts on changes required to evolve and implement agricultural projects to a setup / environment such as the industrial surfaces.

Introductory concepts and terms

Urban agriculture has been defined as the cultivation of crops and rearing of animals for food and other uses within or around cities, including fisheries and forestry. Urban agriculture is a global and growing pursuit that can contribute to economic development, job creation, food security and community building, however, it is limited by competition for space with other forms of urban development and a lack of formalised land-use rights.

Ecological (or Bio-) agricultural initiatives on building surfaces signify a pioneering shift in contemporary farming practices, strategically harnessing vertical or horizontal spaces on structures for sustainable cultivation. Building surfaces, such as rooftops, walls, facades and envelopes, serve as unconventional yet promising grounds for eco-agri-projects. Rooftops, often converted into green roofs or rooftop gardens, offer ample opportunities for cultivating diverse crops, fostering biodiversity, and mitigating urban heat island effects. Vertical walls and specially designed structures provide vertical farming methods opportunities, leveraging innovative techniques like hydroponics or aeroponics to optimise space efficiency and resource utilisation. These projects underscore a transformative approach to urban agriculture, utilising building surfaces to not only enhance urban green spaces but also leverage to food production, promote environmental sustainability, and create resilient urban ecosystems within densely populated areas.

Eco-farmer: An eco-farmer is an agricultural practitioner who prioritises environmentally sustainable farming practices aimed at minimising negative impacts on ecosystems. They focus on holistic approaches to farming, emphasising techniques that promote biodiversity, soil health, and natural resource conservation. Eco-farmers often employ organic farming methods, utilise renewable energy, practice crop rotation, and minimise the use of synthetic chemicals or pesticides.

Bio-farmer: A bio-farmer (short for biological farmer), engages in farming practices that primarily emphasise biological processes and organic inputs. Bio-farming emphasises the use of natural and biological methods to maintain soil fertility, manage pests, and nurture healthy crops. Bio-farmers commonly rely on techniques such as composting, biological pest control, and crop rotation while avoiding synthetic chemicals or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Eco-friendly farmer: An eco-friendly farmer is an agricultural practitioner dedicated to adopting environmentally conscious and sustainable farming practices. They prioritise methods that minimise the ecological footprint of farming operations. Eco-friendly farmers focus on reducing waste, conserving water, enhancing soil health, and implementing renewable energy sources. Their farming practices aim to preserve ecosystems, support biodiversity, and contribute positively to environmental conservation efforts.
